Top Twenty Christmas Songs Of All Time

With the holiday season upon us, it is the perfect time t.o rank the 'top twenty' Christmas songs of all time. See if you agree! Note: this is not my list.

20. “Jingle Bell Rock” by Bobby Helms
First released by Bobby Helms in "1957," it peaked at #29 on the U.S. Billboard Hot One Hundred It was ‘based’ on the holiday standard “Jingle Bells” and the hit song “Rock Around The Clock,” released a few ‘yrs.’ earlier in "1954". Over time , it has appeared in hit movies such as Jingle All The Way, Lethal and Mean Girls.

19. “Feliz Navidad” by Jose Feliciano
Although the song was recorded in "1970", it slowly gained popularity in the decades since. The song didn’t chart on the U.S. Billboard Hot One Hundred until "1998. "

18. “Run Rudolph Run” by Chuck Berry
Written by Johnny Marks and Marvin Brodie, and popularized by Chuck Berry in "1958", in the same year as his iconic hit “Johnny B. Goode.”

17. “Blue Christmas” by Elvis Presley
While the song was written in "1948", it wasn’t popularized until Elvis Presley released his own version in "1957". Since then, it’s been a rock and roll staple.

16. “Christmas Time Is Here” by Vince Guaraldi Trio
It was written for A Charlie Brown Christmas in "1965" by Lee Mendelson and Vince Guaraldi for the Vince Guaraldi Trio. There is an instrumental version and a vocal version (sung by a choir of children from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in San Rafael, California) of the song.

15. “The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late)” by Alvin & The Chipmunks
In "1958", Ross Bagdasarian, Sr. wrote and performed it. Later, it won two Grammy Awards, including Best Children’s Recording and Best Comedy Performance.

14. “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” by Brenda Lee
It was written by Johnny Marks for singer Brenda Lee, and was first released in "1958". It sold over twenty-five Million copies and appeared in a number of TV shows and movies, most notably Home Alone in '1990."

13. “Silent Night” by Bing Crosby
This Christmas standard was written by Franz Xaver Gruber and lyricist Joseph Mohr in "1818". The song was written about a small town in Austria and popularized by Bing Crosby. In fact, his version of “Silent Night” is the third bestselling single in recorded music history.

12. “Santa Claus Is Coming Town” by Jackson 5
The Jackson 5 released a Christmas album filled with holiday standards in “1970.” From all of the songs recorded for the album, “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” was the biggest hit, as it peaked at #25 on the U.S. Billboard Hot One Hundred.

11. “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” by Gene Autry
Based on the children’s story of the same name from "1939," songwriter Johnny Marks wrote the song later in "1949." Gene Autry was the first t.o record it and it climbed t.o the #1 spot on U.S. music charts. The story and song also spawned an iconic TV special from Rankin/Bass Productions in "1964."

10. “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” by Andy Williams
Recorded by Andy Williams in "1963," it has grown in popularity over time. It has ranked in the Top Ten most downloaded and aired songs during the holiday season since "20." It has also appeared in a number of commercials including Staples, Nissan Motors and Disneyland.

9. “Santa Baby” by Eartha Kitt
Sitting on Santa’s lap is supposed to be every kid’s dream. For the grown-up equivalent, songwriters Joan Javits and Philip Springer wrote “Santa Baby” in "1953" for Eartha Kitt. It was a big hit, selling over Five Hundred Thousand copies which made it a certified Gold Record.

8. “Winter Wonderland” by Michael Bublé
Felix Bernard and Richard B. Smith co-wrote it in "1934." Ever since it has been covered over hundred times by various recording artists. However, one of the most popular versions is by Michael Bublé, who recorded it in '2013.' His version spent weeks on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary charts peaking at #26.

7. “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow” by Dean Martin
Although Ella Fitzgerald also recorded the song, it was popularized by Dean Martin. Interestingly, songwriters Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne wrote the song during a heatwave in" July,1945." The pair imagined how they would cool down from the heat and wrote the song in the process.

This is probably one of the most well-known Christmas carols ever made. Composed by Adolphe Adam from a poem by a wine merchant in "1847, the origins are in France where it’s known as “Cantique de Noël.” One of the most popular renditions of the Christmas song is from Josh Groban, who recorded a version in "2002," which went to #1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Singles chart.

2. “All I Want for Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey
Released in "1994," it has been the go-to Christmas song for more than twenty years. It became a new holiday standard and an instant hit peaking at #1 on the U.S. Holiday One Hundred during a 30-week stint. It reached the top of the Billboard Hot One Hundred in "2015.", twenty-one years after it was first released.

1. “White Christmas” by Bing Crosby
Written by Irving Berlin in "1942" it is one of the best Christmas songs ever. Crooner Bing Crosby popularized the song on his NBC radio show on Christmas Day, and the song quickly became the best-selling single of all time. It sold more than One Hundred million copies around the world.

I like several of the songs listed for different reasons. One of my other all-time favourites, which didn't make the list is Merry Christmas Darling by the Carpenters. Did yours make the list?

It is hard to disagree with this cheery, upbeat list.

From a historical (and Judeo-Christian) perspective, the GOAT list would also include these more somber and spiritual pieces:

Come All Ye Faithful
God Rest You Merry Gentlemen
The First Noel
Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
Joy To The World
What Child Is This?

While I grew up singing these tunes, I am cheered to see Christmas evolving into a more diverse and inclusive celebration. I have no qualms about stuffing these oldies into a memory box.

"All I Want for Christmas Is You” by Vince Vance and the Valiants is a much better song that anything Mariah Carey has done.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

Some good tunes there. I think the list must be based on billboard positions and that is why they have missed some important ones out.

The interesting thing about lists is that they rarely get universal agreement. These are all great songs IMHO. What ever happened to Jose Feliciano BTW?

Have a very Merry Christmas sexyldy! Here's to better things in 2021.

Perhaps the list I included should have differentiated between songs, carols and hymns. The first time I heard 'O Holy Night' sung by a tenor, I was in grade two. To this day, I can't listen, to it without crying.

Gee, I had forgotten about that song and didn't know the Doris Day version. Did you know, Frank Sinatra recorded it before her. For what would become the B-side of " White Christmas ", Sinatra first recorded "The Christmas Waltz" with a chorus as well as an arrangement by Nelson Riddle on August 23, 1954.

Yes, I agree. It's one of the reasons I wanted to share this list. I saw Jose Feliciano featured recently on CBS Sunday Morning in honour of the 50 year anniversary of Feliz Navidad. He sounded great. Merry Christmas to you. Keep safe and here's to a much better 2021!

Every year when mom was alive we would watch White Christmas. I loved the move and it doesn't surprise me that it's the number 1 song. I also love the soft tender voice of Nat King Cole. There is something about him like Bing Crosby that I like very much. I won't listen to anything by Mariah Carey. I just don't like how she thinks she's better than everyone else. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year.

White Christmas's longevity is a testament to the quality of the song and Bing's interpretation of it. I too am not a Mariah fan. I know this year has been a tough one for you. Peace be with you and may 2021 bring you happiness,

I wrote this a few years ago but it just never caught on.......

Up on the housetop slick as glass
Santa fell down and broke his ass
Hit his balls on a to by four
Santa don't come to my house no more.....LMAO!

Great list.
"I'm dreaming of a white Christmas" is one of my favorites...
Today (01/11/2021) we got 7-8 inches of snow, in South Central Texas!
The first time my 9 year old Granddaughter has seen snow.......

No doubt many have wondered how Santa was never injured dropping down into chimneys! It’s been a strange winter thus far...we have not had much snow and mostly above seasonal temperatures. However, it could all change by the end of this month when the polar vortex starts pushing this way. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

Yes but Do You know how the Mel Torme Christmas song originated?? It was a Hot Summer day in California and He wrote about snowy scene. Jack Frost nipping at your nose ... When his friend returned He showed. him the lyrics. They decided that Nat King Cole should sing it first.
Actually I did know that. I found out about it when I was doing the research for this post. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
